The rainbow fish with its iridescent scales is the most beautiful fish in the whole ocean. But since he is also vain and proud, he becomes more and more lonely over time. Then he realizes that you can’t win friends through beauty. He overcomes his pride and begins to distribute his glitter scales to the other fish.
The foil-stamped scales on every page catch the light and my daughter keeps running her finger over them during bedtime. The story about the vain fish learning to share lands gently, no preachiness. It's held up to a year of nightly readings too.
My 4-year-old asks for this one every single night, and I don't mind rereading it because the message about sharing actually lands. The moment when the fish gives away his shiny scales and finally makes friends gets him every time.
The foil scales on every page catch the light and my daughter runs her finger over them while I read. I like that the story doesn't shy away from the loneliness part, it gives us something to talk about after. Worth the hardcover price over the board version.
